LG Electronics Expanding Ultra-large TV Lineup

88-inch 8K Signature OLED TV from LG Electronics

Market research firm Omdia reported on May 11 that the global sales volume of OLED TVs with a size of at least 80 inches is estimated to exceed 22,000 units this year. For reference, the shipments added up to 900 units last year.

At present, a very small number of such products are available in the market, and they support the 8K high resolution, which means consumers have few to choose from. The estimated growth is conspicuous in this regard. Even LG Electronics’ OLED TVs include just one model of that size, the 88-inch 8K Signature OLED TV.

According to the market research firm, OLED TVs ranging from 70 to 79 inches are expected to record a sales volume of 325,700 this year, up 70.3 percent from a year ago. This volume increased no less than 245 percent in 2020.

Last year, the sales ratio of 60- to 69-inch OLED TVs (41.5 percent) exceeded that of 50- to 59-inch (41.4 percent) for the first time ever. The gap is likely to widen this year. The sales ratio of OLED TVs with a size of at least 80 inches is estimated to rise to 1.6 percent, 3.4 percent and 4 percent in 2021, 2022 and 2023, respectively.

Under the circumstances, LG Electronics is expanding its ultra-large TV lineup. Specifically, the number of 70-inch and larger products will be increased from seven to 11 and its 83-inch 4K OLED TV is about to make its debut.
