LG Display announced, on January 1, the world's first 88-inch organic light emitting diode (OLED) display panel with 8K picture quality four times brighter than ultra-high definition (UHD) display panels currently available.

The product has 33 million pixels (7680 × 4320 pixels), 16 times the resolution of a full HD display (1920 × 1080) and quadruple that of a UHD display (3840 × 2160).  8K picture quality means having about 8000 horizontal pixels. An 88-inch OLED panel is the largest OLED display to date. The Korean display giant explained that the product got rid of some experts’ views that OLED displays had technological limitations in showing delicate pictures compared to LCD displays.

Unlike liquid crystal displays (LCDs) which need display backlight areas in order to display ultra-high-resolution pictures, OLEDs can control 33 million pixels one by one, resulting in 8K high resolution and clear pictures, LG Display explained. In addition, OLEDs can emit light on their own without backlights so can be made very thin.

The company will showcase its 8K OLED and other new products at CES 2018, the world's largest consumer electronics and IT show which will run in Las Vegas from January 9 to 12.
