CJ Freshway, a subsidiary of CJ Group, unfairly dismissed a dietitian who found a “mackerel with parasites” at a restaurant operating under a consignment agreement and asked the superior office to improve the system, which was belatedly made public, creating a stir.

The company said that it brought criminal charges against the dietitian because he demanded money with menaces.

There is a mounting criticism that CJ Freshway, which has gone global, including Vietnam, as a food ingredient distributor and institutional food service provider, put whistle blower management before food ingredient hygiene management.

Domestic online news outlet Nocut News exclusively reported that a dietitian who worked at CJ Freshway recently got fired after he found a mackerel covered with black parasites, which was delivered as food ingredients, and made a report on it.

In this regard, CJ Freshway said that it contacted and visited its partner restaurant on this issue, collected the product and offered returns after the dietitian brought up the problem for the first time. It added that the dietitian continuously brought up the problem and asked for 50 million won (US$46,083) with threats in March, with the recent incident as justification, and this is why he got a disciplinary dismissal. However, the Jeonnam National Labor Relations Commission and the National Labor Relations Commission ruled that the dietitian was unfairly dismissed in July and October, respectively.
