The Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA) announced on November 12 that a total of 16,833 imported hybrid cars were sold in South Korea for the first 10 months of this year to account for 9.6% of the total sales of imported cars in the market for the period.

The ratio is expected to exceed 10% before the end of this year. The 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid recently made its debut in the market and the 2018 Lexus NX300h does so this week. The popularity of the Lexus ES300h is ongoing. In addition, most BMW, Mercedes Benz and Porsche cars cannot be purchased for the time being after the Ministry of Environment’s certification-related administrative measures on November 9.

The popularity of hybrid cars in the South Korean automobile market began to rise last year. The ratio soared to 7.2% until the end of last year in the wake of the Volkswagen emission scandal. For the first 10 months of this year, the Lexus ES300h recorded a sales volume of 6,357 units in the imported car market as a whole while the BMW 520 came in first with 6,472 units.

In the hybrid car segment of the market, Toyota Camry Hybrid and Prius ranked second and third last month with 423 units and 163 units, respectively. They were followed by NX300h, RX450, Accord Hybrid, Q50 Hybrid and Murano Hybrid.
