On July 15, Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) union members held a demonstration and called for a meeting with President Moon Jae-in with regard to the construction of the fifth and sixth units of the Shin Kori Nuclear Power Plant, which was recently halted for three months.

“The board members, who used to say that nuclear power plants are indispensable, abruptly halted the construction with a change of government,” they said, adding, “What should come first is not such a halt but the preparation of sufficient electric power and renewable energy sources.” They went on to say, “We are basically opposed to the opinion gathering process that is scheduled to continue for the three months, but we will convince the general public of the necessity of atomic power stations during the period.”

After the demonstration attended by more than 100 union members, they held an emergency meeting and adopted a resolution to fight the government as well as KHNP board members and demand a meeting with President Moon Jae-in.

The units were under construction in Seosaeng-myeon, Ulsan City. Local residents opposed to the halt of the construction are planning to hold a meeting in the near future, too.
