KT Corp. announced on Feb. 5 that it demonstrated 5G services, such as omni-point view and virtual reality (VR), during the NFL Superbowl event held in U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on the 4th (local time) by connecting South Korea’s 5G wireless networks and U.S.’ 5G wireless networks through the wired international networks, along with North America’s largest mobile carrier Verizon Wireless and Samsung Electronics Co.

The demonstration was conducted through 5G-capable prototype devices developed by Samsung Electronics.

Verizon Chairman Lowell McAdam and other Verizon representatives experienced KT's omni-point view application in the U.S., while KT Chairman Hwang and his staffers had VR experience of U.S. Bank Stadium with VR headsets. Omni-point view allows viewers to see the moving path of players at a glance by realizing the actual stadium in 3D. McAdam and Hwang also participated in the international call over the 5G networks.

The successful 5G transmission between South Korea and the U.S. over prototype 5G devices is the result of ongoing collaboration between KT, Verizon and Samsung Electronics. The three companies are working closely on 5G, including the world’s first 5G standards establishment (PyeongChang 5G), 5G device and system development and 5G testbed network establishment and know-how sharing. They also contributed to an early settlement of 3GPP NSA global standards, which are compatible with LTE-5G, and have a positive effect on the activation of the G ecosystem in the future.

The three companies will continuously work together to develop technologies optimized to 5G commercialization and establish efficient networks and develop operation technologies as well as develop 5G edge computing services. They are also planning to collaborate on 5G global standardization scheduled this year.
