LG Display will mass-produce “QHD +” panels, which are the first mobile display with an 18 to 9 aspect ratio. This panel has improved resolution compared to a QHD panel which is four times as clear as a HD panel.

LG Display announced on January 10 that it succeeded in developing the QHD + LCD panel for 5.7 inch (14.5 cm) mobile devices with the world's first 18 to 9 aspect ratio. The product will be used in LG Electronics’ G6 smartphone, which will be unveiled next month at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Spain.

The key point of the product developed by LG Display this time is that it applied an 18 to 9 aspect ratio to smartphones. Smartphone displays have been developed to have 4 to 3, 3 to 2, 5 to 3, 16 to 9 and recently 17 to 9 aspect ratios.

"As video consumption and multitasking trends continue to increase, an 18 to 9 aspect ratio is quite meaningful in that the aspect ratio gives new visual experiences to consumers, suggesting a future direction for displays," an LG Display spokesperson said. "The 18 to 9 aspect ratio is an optimal ratio for multitasking utilizing the dual screen (split screen) function.

A quad HD (QHD) has a 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution which is four times that of the normal HD (720 × 1280). The number of pixels per inch is 538 PPI based on a 5.5 inch (14 cm) panel. This time, LG Display developed a 1440 x 2880 resolution with 564 PPI which are higher than existing QHD LCDs’ PPI. Accordingly, LG Display named the resolution of the new product as QHD +.

LG Display's proprietary “In-Touch” technology enhances touch screen accuracy and makes it possible to develop slimmer and lighter smartphones because this technology saves smartphones touch screen glasses.

In terms of modules, the widths (borders) of the upper, lower, right and lower bezels of QHD+ displays were reduced by 0.2 mm (20 percent) and 0.54 mm (10 percent), respectively, compared to conventional QHD LCDs. In addition, QHD+ displays have transparency 10 percent better than existing QHD LCD, which results in higher outdoor visibility and a 30 percent reduction in power consumption.
